So it is important to remember that the Government has made allowances for those that have a legitimate reason for not wearing a face covering.

Exemptions are made if:

  • You have a disability that prevents you from putting a mask on.
  • You have a disability that prevent you from wearing a face covering.
  • You use lip reading and need any person with you to uncover their face.

You are also entitled to remove your mask if it is essential for you to eat, drink or take medication.

If you think any of these apply to you, then you may need to seek clarification from your doctor or support worker. However you must not feel like you HAVE to wear one if you are unable to - but that doesn't mean you are allowed to refuse if it simply makes you feel uncomfortable.

I must urge people not to challenge those that are not wearing a mask, many of them are doing so becuase they have a disability that prevents it. Many disabled people are worried that they will be chanllenged for not wearing a mask, and will stop going out becuase of this. It's time for us to all pull together, not shame people.
